Summer Courses
Rock climbing, scrambling, hill walking and summer ML courses are best from May to October. Abacus Mountaineering provides all these courses on Ben Nevis, Glen Coe and Skye. Our select group of instructors will guide you through new skills on real, adventurous and challenging routes.
Ben Nevis. If you are reasonably fit and conditions are good you should be able to walk up Ben Nevis in a full day-walk of six to eight hours - but you should never take it lightly as conditions can change dramatically even in the best weather. There are several different routes to choose from including the Carn Mor Dearg Arete.
Summer Hillwalking. Scottish hills require navigation, route planning, expedition skills and emergency ropework to give you the confidence to explore new areas off the beaten track. Guiding on classic Munro's, the skills of micro navigation and what to do if caught out in steep broken ground can all be included in a summer walking and mountaineering course.
Scrambling. There are many ridges and rocky faces that are beyond the realm of the casual hill walker; exposed ridges and easy rock climbs that don’t always require a rope but demand a hands–on approach. Scrambling on rocky ground with simple climbing skills and a good head for heights is the next step from summer hillwalking.
Rock Climbing. Using some of Britain's finest rock climbing venues (Glen Coe, Glen and Ben Nevis, Ardverikie, Creag Dudh and Ardnamurchan) you will be able to climb some of the best routes in the country while learning the skills to become totally self-reliant. From beginners coaching to guiding on classic extremes, it's all here for you.
Skye and the Cuillin Ridge. The Black Cuillin of Skye offer a unique, world class experience of scrambling and climbing. A traverse of the entire ridge comprises 10km of continuous scrambling along the very exposed and complex ridge, with rock climbing sections of up to grade Very Difficult and many abseils.
ML Courses. The ML scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland. This qualification will give you the confidence to lead walking groups in the hills for friends, voluntary groups or for work.
