Seven Second Summits

Despite starting climbing very recently, Radek Kudibal has big plans and is doing everything right to achieve them. In January of 2008 Radek made his first trip to Scotland when we climbed The Curtain Rail and Ledge Route. Climbing on Ben Nevis in good conditions is enough to inspire anyone and it certainly got Radek thinking about future possibilities.

Later on in the winter of 2008 Radek came back and climbed North Buttress on Stob Ban and Comb Gully Buttress. This was all in preparation for a summer trip to climb Mont Rosa. When we met in Saas Grund in June 2008 Radek let me in on his big plan involving climbing several peaks in the Alps before moving on to Alaska and finally K2.

Our climb of Monte Rosa went very well and we made the first ascent that summer from the Margerita Hut. The ridge, which is usually mostly climbed on rock, was still covered in snow and made for a very exciting and challenging climb at quite high altitude.

After further thought the idea of climbing the Seven Second Summits came up. The Seven Summits is now a recognised challenge involving climbing the highest summit on each of the seven continents. The seven second highest summits include -

  • K2 8611m Pakistan, Asia
  • Ojos del Salado 6891m Chile, south America
  • Mount Logan 5951m Canada, North America
  • Dychtau 5204m or Rustiveli 5201m Russia, Europe (there is uncertainty about exact heights)
  • Mount Kenya 5201m, Africa
  • Naga Pulu 4862m Indonesia, Australasia
  • Mount Tyree 4852m, Antarctica

Generally these peaks involve harder climbing and are far less busy than the Seven Summits. Clearly K2 is far more serious than Everest, Dychtau requires great Alpine climbing skills and Mount Kenya involves grade Severe rock climbing at 5200m!

During the winter of 2009 Radek made five weekend trips to Scotland. We had our fair share of bad weather but we did some excellent training and some very good climbs. Here's what we got up to -

Next up we have a trip to Chamonix planned in June 2009 followed by Mount Kenya. Subscribe to the RSS Feed to keep track of how we get on.
