Summer Mountain Leader Courses
The Mountain Leader Award (ML) was established to promote the safe enjoyment of the hills and mountains in the UK. The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland, other than in winter conditions. It integrates experience, training, and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in mountainous country.

The MLA Scheme offers the opportunity to gain technical competence in leading walkers in the hills and mountains. It does not provide a rock climbing qualification, nor does it cover the skills required for the planned use of the rope. Completion of a training course, without a pass result at assessment, is not a qualification in itself.
Mountain Leader Training Scotland (MLTS) is responsible for all aspects of the ML scheme in Scotland from registration to quality control. Abacus Mountaineering is an approved course provider moderated on a regular basis to ensure parity of standards.
