Course Information

Abacus Mountaineering courses are tailored to your exact requirements in terms of content, duration and dates. We don’t advertise scheduled dates for courses on which you would be put with people you don’t know and with different experience and expectations. We prefer to run courses when you want and for how long you want. The content is aimed at your exact experience level and the direction you want to go in after the course.

Abacus Mountain Guides and Instructors are selected for their cutting edge skills and great enthusiasm for the Scottish hills. With superior coaching we pass on our experience of climbing at the highest level. We will get you onto the routes you want to do and give you the skills you need in the place you need to use them!

This web site contains information and prices for summer and winter mountaineering, scrambling, rock climbing and winter climbing. The prices include all instruction and guiding, ropes and technical equipment and usually transport from Fort William. In addition to the guiding fee is your accommodation, personal accident and cancellation insurance, your personal equipment and packed lunch. Personal accident insurance is a free benefit of mebership of the MCofS. We can only return 25% of the course fee if you cancel within four weeks of your start date so cancellation insurance is recommended.

If you would like us to arrange accommodation for you please let us know the dates and number of nights you need, how many people it is for and what type of accommodation you want. We can arrange your accommodation at the following rates -

  • Self-catering accommodation in a bunk house is £15 per person per night.
  • Bed and breakfast accommodation is £30 per person per night.
  • Hotel bed and breakfast accommodation is £50 per person per night.

To arrange your own accommodation you can find some information on places to stay on our accommodation page.

Look at the equipment page for kit lists and information on what you will need to bring.

For more information and advice on what type of course is most suited to you, the exact content of a course, the equipment you need or help in finding accommodation do not hesitate to get in touch. We would rather spend the time giving you all the information you need prior to any booking being made, rather than you arriving expecting something different to what we can provide.

Mountaineering is heavily influenced by the weather and your course structure may be dictated by the current conditions. The decisions made by your instructor will be based on what you have done in the past, what you want to do now, the weather and conditions on the day. Sometimes it is the weather that dictates where you go, other times you have the full choice and you can go anywhere you want.
